Greetings, my fellow port swillers!
A nice day to be outside in the Port Swiller neighborhood today and Ol’ Robbo took advantage of it to continue his fall cleanup. (Nice aside from the gnats, that is. We haven’t yet had sufficiently cold weather to kill off the little bastards.)
Task A was pruning back the big Liriope beds along the sidewalk. It’s a tedious job but it’s also a good way to be neighborly as I was able to chat with folks strolling by. (There’s sometimes a little hesitation in their eyes as they try to decide if I’m a respectable home-owner who happens to like gardening or else if I’m just the help.) But now I have several blisters on my cutting hand and my knees are aching with all that kneeling. I think I may need to turn more attention to these beds next year in terms of feeding and watering. The Liriope are expanding, but not as quickly as I had thought they might. We’ve had them six or seven years anyway and Ol’ Robbo would have thought they’d fill in more than they have. (But of course that just makes for a larger pruning job so perhaps I should be careful of what I wish.)
Task B was going at the leaves again. So far I continue to avoid that Sisyphus-like despair I get some years, prolly because the weather has been so cooperative. In fact, the trees are better than half-way finished now so as I worked I tried to remember that Churchill quote about this not being the beginning of the end or even the end of the beginning, but of the beginning of the end of the beginning of the beginning. Or whatever it is.
Task C was applying the last treatment of lime to the lawn for this year. Ol’ Robbo simply can’t think of anything remotely entertaining to say about this. All I know is that the practice has had a definite impact on the strength and health of the grass.
So there you have it. Ol’ Robbo is actually pretty beat, but if I don’t go out and start grilling the brauts, nobody else is going to, so I suppose I need to get on with it.

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.
Part of Churchill’s statement to the House of Commons on the victory at El Alamein.

Yaas.
For the second day now, WordPress is not letting me post anything. I assume it’s some kind of technical snafu but can’t help wondering if they’ve finally caught up with me and if Churchill, however mangled, was the last straw. I hope not.

And it’s a shame, too, because today marks my 20th bloggyversity so I actually had something to write about for a change.
I’ve tried to send a signal to the HomeWorld. We’ll see if anything comes of it.
