I am the rapidly-approaching–more-or-less middle-aged husband of a wife of whom I’m not worthy. I am the father of three daughters who, in one of His wryer moments, God gave me in answer to the wish of my younger days to be surrounded by beautiful women. I am a now not-so-recent Catholic convert and a social traditionalist. I am interested in just about everything and an expert in just about nothing. I generally treat the “real” world with what my mother describes as cheerful contempt.
So there you are. I can be reached at portswillers -AT- gmail.com if the tide in your glass is running dangerously low and is in need of recharging.

Hello:
I stumbled onto your website via The Irish Elk site.
I am enjoying it very much.
I have a question though, …where is the title line from, “The Port Stands At Your Elbow.”..literary allusion?A night out with friends?
I am curious.
Cheers,
Jim Fleming

“The Port Stands at Your Elbow…” I believe Holmes says this to Watson somewhere along the way.

Welcome aboard, Mr. Nightfly! It’s actually a reference to the Aubrey/Maturin novels of Patrick O’Brian, to which I am deeply addicted. (Not that it couldn’t also appear in the Holmes stories, although I must confess that I have not read many of them and certainly don’t qualify as a Baker Street Irregular.)

I admire your employment of the word “athwart.” I often find myself using the term to describe the situation of objects and just as often receive blank stares and confused looks for my efforts.

Well, thank you Bill Buckley, from whom I stole it. (Of course, while he advocated yelling “Stop!”, I am much more fatalistic about the slide of the West in to the abyss and instead believe there’s not much else one can do than have another drink.)

I think that you might enjoy the blog WrathOfGnon (http://wrathofgnon.tumblr.com), if you are not already aware of it (I have no interest to declare, other than an enjoyment of both that blog and yours).
