Stomping my own new post below, but I just wanted to say good for Betsy DeVos for advising college conservatives this week, “Don’t shut up.”
I sent the article to Eldest Gel (sorry, don’t know how to link on my iPhone) and she really appreciated it. Currently, she’s locked in battle with her Econ prof: the prof sets up a political/economic question based in certain given (and slanted) assumptions, and the Gel immediately starts challenging said assumptions. Rancor ensues.
The other thing that irritates the hell out of her is the expectation that she conform to certain beliefs and attitudes based on her sex. Apparently she was arguing about this with someone the other day and said, “I’m a woman. So, what? I think for myself, thank you.” Much fainting ensued.
That’s my Gel!

Meanwhile, I got an email today from the Gel’s school telling me that there was a new bill to pay. I was taken aback, as I had verified a zero balance several times during tax prep in the unholy disaster known as education tax credit and tax-advantaged college savings programs, the interactions between the two, and the special deduction for Best Picture announcement errors (I still think Warren threw Faye under the bus on that one). Might need UPS to get the tax return in. In any case, it’s an April 18 filing (according to Turbo).
Turns out she has some campus parking tickets and the school assumes that if they flag it for the parents, we’ll pay without asking. The following text conversation was pointed; Gel says she’s already cleared the issue with campus Security at no cost, but I will keep on her. Details are yet forthcoming.
When I attended the Peoples’ Glorious Soviet of Hamilton, NY the administration would gladly rat my ass out to my parents complete with the gory details if they thought it would produce cash. In today’s “student privacy” era all I see is a bill and have no legal way to ask campus about it unless Gel agrees. I’m giving her a bit of freedom for freshman year, but for me to make the necessary financial transfers for sophomore year will require a few more online credentials to ensure I see the grades.
