trader-jacquesMrs. R came home yesterday  from Trader Joe’s with a new thingum of hand soap for the downstairs loo.

I couldn’t help noticing that because it is branded as “French”, the stuff appears under the label “Trader Jacques”.

This irritates me.

“Jacques” is the French for “John”, not “Joe”. [Update N.B. – There is a dispute about this in the comments.  If there is an error here, it is obviously on the part of the French.]  “Joseph”, of course,  is the same in both languages.  Either the marketers, in their effort to go for teh cutesy, didn’t know or care about this or else they just assumed that their customers wouldn’t know or care.

I tell you truly, friends, the whole “Trader Joe’s” label is a mile wide and an inch deep.  I shudder to think what kind of person is taken in by it.  Sophisticated? Gawd!
