Trying to explain Act IV of Le Nozzi Di Figaro to my eight year old.
“Well, you see, Figaro is angry because he thinks the Contessa is really Suzanna trying to snare the Count….”
“Well, you see, the Contessa is pretending to be Suzanna in order to trap the Count….”
“Well, you see, Suzanna is pretending to be the Contessa in order to get Figaro to woo her in order to make the Count jealous….”
“Well, you see, Figaro is pretending to be the Count wooing Suzanna, who is really the Countess, so that Figaro can prove that Suzanna is being unfaithful…..”
” Well, you see, Suzanna is mad at Figaro because she thinks he thinks she could be unfaithful to him with the Count……”
“Well, you see, the Contessa got the goods on the Count after he wooed her thinking she was Suzanna…..”
“Well, you see, Barbarina will basically go for anything in pants that slows down long enough…….”
“Well, you see, Cherubino will basically go for anything in a skirt that slows down long enough….”
In the end?
“Look, never mind all that. Just listen to the beautiful musick…..”
Perhaps I should have started with that approach……
